Alcazaba Guided Tour
Tour Details
Meet your guide at the entrance of the Alcazaba of Almería, the largest Arab citadel in Spain. Built in the 10th century, this vast fortress was later expanded by the Catholic Monarchs following the Reconquista, giving it the unique blend of Islamic and Christian elements we see today.
We'll begin our tour at the Puerta del Viento, now known as the Gate of Justice, before we make our first stop in the gardens of the first enclosure. Here, we'll discover the ingenious hydraulic system that once supplied water to the citadel. As we climb the garden steps, we'll reach the Muro de la Vela, or 'Wall of the Sail', which historically housed an enormous bell that would alert the population to important or threatening events in Almeria.
Crossing the wall, we'll step into the second enclosure to explore the Caliphal cisterns. From there, we'll pass through the Hermitage Gate and continue to the troop baths, the Arab houses, and the fascinating remains of the Muslim king's palace and administrative buildings.
Next, we'll head into the Christian castle, remarkably well-preserved, where we'll get a sense of the stronghold's later history. As we descend, we'll stop at the warden's house and enjoy sweeping views of the Mediterranean gardens of La Hoya, the ancient city walls, the Castle of San Cristóbal, and the striking Sacred Heart of Jesus monument.
Finally, after between 1.5 and 2 hours, we'll bring this tour to an end at the castle.
